My Todos Santos Vacation

When I think of "vacation" I think of the smell of the ocean, surfing without a wetsuit and disconnecting from everyday life. Others may think of delicious food, adventure, privacy, or even "work!" - it's not unusual these days for people to spend their hard-earned vacation volunteering to help improve the local community that they choose to visit.

One place that offers all of these is Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. It gives you the opportunity to retreat to a place where the pace of life is slower, the food is amazing, adventure awaits, the surf is firing, and where you can volunteer to save endangered sea turtles. All of these possibilities make Todos Santos special.

I've spent some part of the last five winters in Todos Santos hotels and believe it is one of North America's classic vacation destinations. This isn't a cliché resort town, rather it boasts quaint yet elegant boutique hotels and gourmet dining. The empty beaches offer the opportunity to find solitude and inner calm, but you may look forward to the sight of another person!

If you're going to Todos Santos alone or with your loved ones, I would highly recommend staying at Villa Santa Cruz. The Villa, situated on 20 acres of secluded beachfront property, is the ultimate beach getaway.  It has just four cozy rooms and a warm, casual atmosphere.  Yet, its close proximity to town gives guests the option to try authentic Baja meals from the local restaurants, (i.e. hand squeezed lime margaritas, empanadas, fish tacos) or to pick up fresh fruit, veggies, and seafood and whip up a dish of your own! Visitors from the US or Canada may want to try a cooking class as the Villa – it will give you a true Todos Santos culinary experience!

If you are looking for a surfing trip, the beaches of Todos Santos do not disappoint. Cerritos is a playful beach break just south of town where all levels of surfers can have fun. You'll find more advanced breaks like San Pedrito (north of Cerritos) and La Pastora (just a 10 minute walk from Villa Santa Cruz). The chance to score amazing waves is high, especially in the winter. Water temperatures don't require a wetsuit in the heat of the day, but a wetsuit is welcome for cold morning starts.

So plan your vacation to Todos Santos. You'll find that this dusty little Baja Sur beach town is an oasis in the desert that will leave a mark on you for the rest of your life.
